MANILA, Philippines—The independent gay film “Parisukat” is definitely not for squares.

Directed by Jonison Fontanos, this new digital drama is billed as a “murder-mystery.”
Fontanos, however, would rather describe it as a longing Valentine to a gay friend who was brutally murdered in February 2004.

He pointed out that “Parisukat,” which opens on March 4, is running in local theaters in the same month as his friend’s death anniversary.

“It’s my tribute to him,” explained Fontanos, who also directed “Hugot.” “I started writing the script six years ago, after my friend’s murder. According to the police, he allowed a callboy into his condominium unit.”
His body bore multiple stab wounds, he recalled. “Until now, the suspect remains at large.”

He titled the script “Parisukat”—not only after the claustrophobic condo unit, but after the elusiveness of truth after a crime of passion.

“I toyed with the idea of four corners, four sides ... four versions of the story of my friend’s death.”

With its shifting points of view as narrative device, “Parisukat” could easily be assumed as a homage to Akira Kurosawa’s “Rashomon” or Laurice Guillen’s “Salome.”

“I’ve yet to watch ‘Rashomon’ or ‘Salome’... as inspired by the films of Alfred Hitchcock, though,” he admitted. “Before shooting my film, I fed myself with a steady diet of ‘Psycho,’ ‘Rear Window’ and ‘The Birds.’ Thus, most shots in my film are in close-up ... since I wanted to highlight the emotions of each character.”

He expressed elation to be “part of the emerging pink film movement in the Philippines.”

“It was a breakthrough moment when filmmakers were allowed to experiment without worrying about the budget ... gay films thrived [because] it was largely left untouched.”
